In an old Welsh story, a Prince notices that his favourite dog, Gelert, is missing from a day’s hunting.
On returning home, he finds his baby’s cot overturned, and surrounded by blood.
Gelert is also covered in blood, so the prince kills him, assuming he has hurt the baby.
On righting the cot, the prince finds the baby unharmed then notices the dead body of a wolf nearby. He realises too late that Gelert has protected the baby from the wolf and he has been killed for this. Gelert's grave can be seen in the village of Beddgelert in North Wales.
We believe that this story demonstrates how people frequently misunderstand their dogs, and act inappropriately as a result. Our dog training is based on educating owners to understand their pet dog, and to allow him or her to learn throughout life as part of the family.
